Information about the Sports and Entertainment in Greece
Entertainment and Culture:
Athens remains the centre for music and the theatre, although the annual
Athens Festival is something of a misnomer, because it includes
performances at the ancient Epidaurus theatre and in several other parts
of the country. Although concentrated in August and September, the
length and scope of the programmes and the number of performances
outside Athens grows each year. Many clubs, live music halls, bars
are almost in every big town in Greece. Many restaurants offer live
Greek music.
The Acropolis is a perennial attraction. Do not miss the all-embracing
view of it, and of Athens and the coast, from the top of Philopappos
Hill, across the road from the Acropolis. Near the foot of Philopappus
are the cells where legend says Socrates spent his last days. In summer,
Dora Stratou's Greek folk-dancers perform in an open-air theatre on
Philopappos.
Another hill worthy of ascent is Lycabettos, rising steeply from the
Kolonaki residential district above Syntagma (Constitution) Square. A
funicular opened in 1965 takes you to the summit .
Athens has many winter and summer (open-air) theatres and cinemas. Some
productions, especially those of the National Theatre Company and the
Arts Theatre , maintain a very high standard. Works are
presented in Greek. Winter and summer concerts and many other
artistic events take place at many places like the the Music hall of
Athens (Megaron) , the Herodes Atticus theatre featuring among many other musical events, foreign artists
and conductors as frequent guests. The state-sponsored opera presents
foreign and local singers. The many cinemas, both winter and open-air, show
foreign films with Greek sub-titles, as well as locally made films.
Sports in Greece and the Greek islands there are many facilities for golf, tennis, sailing, climbing , fishing,
and, in winter, seven ski centres with runs and lifts.
Spectator sports, inexplicably, lie as a rule outside the visitor's
itinerary. Athens has its international motor racing event of its own
the 3, 100 km. Acropolis Rally, held May 30th to Jun 1st. Lesser
races and rallies are held in the summer and in November. There is horse
racing 4 times in the week in Markopoulo near the Airport. Association football
is followed with intense enthusiasm the OAKA
stadium of Athens seats 80,000- Yacht-racing and rowing regattas are frequent.
