General information:Greece lies at the south-eastern point of
the European Mediterranean. Although a small country (50,000 sq. miles),
its deeply indented coastline is longer than that of Spain and Portugal
together. Greek waters are studded with about 1,400 islands, only 166 of
them inhabited, and some the private holiday-grounds of millionaires: a
total area of almost io,ooo sq. m. The northern and eastern borders of
mainland Greece are shared with Albania, Fyrom, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
Boats to the islands are frequent, and there are ferries between the mainland and the Greek
islands. Good, fast, and inexpensive ferry services connect Greece with
Italy from Patras and Igumenitsa, adequate roads reach her borders
across Turkey and the Balcans the main Greek roads are good. Frontier
posts, whether sea or airport or on the highways, are being specially
adapted to the needs of tourism, and formalities are continually being
reduced. Main areas of tourist interest are served by comfortable
Pullman coaches. Rapid trains connect Athens with Volos, Thessaloniki,
and Patras.
For nationals of most countries, only a valid passport is necessary (for
EU nationlas only an ID) and they do not require a visa for a stay of
less than three months. Motorists should carry an international driving
licence, and the car registration book; although insurance is not yet
compulsory, it is advisable to obtain the insurance green card, making
sure that this is valid for Greece.
A foreigner may take his car into Greece freely, either with a customs
carnet issued by his national automobile club, or with a special
customs-free card available at the Greek frontier. The latter is valid
for one year.
The currency of Greece is the EURO. The rate of exchange is roughly
1.43559 euro to the pound sterling, 1.41684 euro to the U.S. dollar.
Travellers' cheques, exchanged at main hotels. ATM's are everywhere.
Driving is on the right, overtaking on the left, following the
Continental pattern. Many Greeks ignore the second regulation, but it
would be imprudent for the visitor to do so. Standard and international
signs are used, including speed limits and warnings at more spectacular
bends. Railway-crossings are plainly marked, but are often unguarded and
should be treated with respect.he hotel industry of Greece has made
great strides in the last decade. Starting almost from scratch, main
centres now offer hotels in six categories. Prices, regardless of
category, vary from region to region, with Athens topping the list.
Charges are for the room, not per person, although a reduction is
usually acceptable.

Parking outside Athens is no problem, but in Athens there are few kerbs without a no-parking sign. A few stretches of kerbside in central Athens are reserved for cars with foreign plates, but the space is both inadequate and likely to be filled with the cars of sanguine Greeks. Garages and parkingplaces are becoming numerous in Athens, but often they are not where the motorist needs them most, or, if they are, they are useful only for those with time to spare for the lengthy delivery process.
Roads in general are narrow and not well signposted. Lesser roads vary from
average to bad, though almost all are passable except in winter, when some,
especially in the mountains, should not be attempted without chains.
